National Multiple Sclerosis Donation

Cora Lee Meier has done it again! She has knitted the Elizabeth Zimmerman 100th anniversary "Pi Camping*" shawl (designed by Judy Shedden) and donated it to Tempe Yarn to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. This wonderful shawl is made of Zitron's Filagran (in Smoke color way) with yarn that was graciously donated by Skacel Collection Yarn Company.

With a minimum $5.00 donation at Tempe Yarn, you can have your name entered into a drawing to win this Zimmerman Shawl. If you live outside of the immediate area and you wish to participate, simply give us a call (480 557 9166) and make your donation with either Visa or Mastercard.

Multiple sclerosis is a disease that impacts many people in so many ways. This wonderful pattern includes the themes of Elizabeth Zimmerman's love of camping from the "paw prints"at the center in honor of her pet Kline the cat, the Slanting Twigs to represent a walk in the forest with sun shining through the trees, Willow Leaves to celebrate the beauty of everything growing and green and the Eaves and droplets to represent water lappin up at the edge of the lake or river and rolling back across the sand and rocks (excerpted from the Ravelry pattern page.)"

Cora Lee added a section of Pine trees near the edging to give another additional dimension to the Knit. She loves camping with others and realizes the difficulty that the disease can bring to those who previously have loved the outdoors and camping in particular. With this shawl, she hopes to bring attention to this disease as well as to allow one person to truly enjoy the beauty of this work of art for many generations to come.

Why The National Multiple Sclerosis Society and I Are Moving Towards a Cure

Having multiple sclerosis means that you may suddenly have blurry vision. Or that your memory will fail you for no apparent reason. Or that you may not always be able to walk. The symptoms of MS are different, and devastating, for everyone - the only certainty is that it will affect yet another person every hour of every day.

Why You Should Buy A Drawing Ticket

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society will use funds collected to not only support research for a cure tomorrow, but also to provide programs which address the needs of people living with MS today. Because of your drawing ticket purchase, we are now getting closer to the hour when no one will have to hear the words, "You have MS."

For a minimum $5 donation, you will receive a ticket. The drawing for the shawl will be held at 3pm on March 31st. All proceeds from the drawing will be donated to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Who Is Antje Gillingham?

Antje Gillingham is the owner of the Knitting Nest in Maryville, Tennessee so she has yarn in her blood. But beyond this she is also a well known author of Knitting circles around Socks , Knitting More Circles around Socks , and Knitting circles around Mittens and more.

Antje of was born and raised in Germany where she learned to knit as a young girl. Antje mixes her old world charm with southern hospitality and gushes with enthusiasm for the home craft of knitting.

Why am I telling you about Antje? Well she'll be at Tempe Yarn on January 21st from 1-3pm doing a book signing. Stop by and let's show her some Southwest hospitality.

Jane Patrick of Schacht Spindle Company Coming To Tempe Yarn

Many thanks to Jane & Barry for coming to Tempe Yarn! As expected her presentation was excellent.

On January 20th from 6:30-7:30pm, Jane Patrick will give a free talk at Tempe Yarn on Creative Cloth. This will focus on how to find time to create, as well as ways to work that help develop your ideas into beautiful fabric.

Jane is a past editor of Handwoven magazine and is currently creative director for Schacht Spindle Co. She is the author of two books: Time to Weave, and most recently, The Weaver's Idea Book.

Jane Patrick grew up on the broad plains of south central Nebraska where from an early age she earned the moniker of “the family putzer” because she was always making things. It wasn’t until she walked into the weaving studio at Löngumýri home economic school as an exchange student in Iceland that she knew that weaving was something she must do. Since then weaving has been both her livelihood and hobby.

Telarana Weavers and Spinners Guild, in conjunction with Tempe Yarn, is happy to sponsor Joanne Hall speaking on "Finding Your Comfort Zone: Learning About the Looms You Weave On." This presentation, which is free and open to the public, will be held on January 18th, from 7-9pm at the Mesa Fire Station Community Room at 360 E. 1st Street.

Joanne Hall is a weaver, teacher and author with a Masters Degree in Textile Design from the University of Minnesota. After teaching at the University of Montana and Cal Poly in California, Joanne started the Elkhorn Mountains Weaving Studio in Montana City, Montana, where she weaves tapestries and teaches weaving classes. She is the author of "Mexican Tapestry Weaving", Tying up the Countermarch Loom" and "Learning to Warp your Loom".

By understanding how you weave, you can make improvements to the equipment you use. Joanne states "I want to see weavers comfortable while they weave, enjoying weaving and producing the kinds of craftsmanship that they aspire to make."

Her presentation will focus on making adjustments to your loom, your posture and your weaving motions. She will discuss throwing the shuttle, catching the shuttle, making easy movements, choosing a shuttle for the weave and using weaving accessories that make better quality results.

Who Would You Want to Be Stranded On a Desert Island With ....

if you wanted to learn "Freeform"? Sorry I had to limit your dream, I saw where it was going! I vote for Terry.

So what is Freeform? No it's not yoga. Let's go back to the desert island for a minute.

Since there is nothing else on the island but yarn, needles and hooks (don't worry about where these came from it's a dream), what can you do. Well you could do a knitting project or a crochet project, but why not Freeform it. Freeform is like mixing peanut butter and jelly together. They are good separate but put them together and you have something special.

Freeform combines crochet and/or knitting that encompasses a number of creative techniques using a wide variety of stitches and fibers without a pattern. Freeform differs from traditional crochet and knitting in that fabic is created in pieces and then put together to form the garment as opposed to following a set linear pattern.

Does Freeform appeal to your creative side? Are you the type who likes to jump into a project and learn it all? Now truth in adverstising - I don't have a desert island, but I do have a chance for you to learn freeform in a focused two 1/2 day class at Fibers in Time.

Terry Neal, owner of Tempe Yarn, will be teaching Free Form, or Art in Revolution (Evolution) at the 2012 Fibers Through Time. The two 1/2 day desert island escape (class) will be held on April 20th -22nd at the InnPlace Phoenix North.

Looking Back at 2011

Let's look back on what our community did in 2011.

Education:

Gwen Bortner and Cat Bordhi taught at TYF (both are returning later this month).

We taught over 900 new knitters and 150 crocheters the basics for their yarn journey.

Olds College Master Spinners Program Level 1, hosted at TYF, gave 13 lucky folks the opportunity to start a program that can lead to a Master Spinners degree.

Terry was selected to teach Freeform at the 2012 Fibers In Time.

Welcome to 2012

We are hopeful that 2012 will be a year of positives.

Our key focuses this year will be:
Education: Keeping alive and growing the yarn arts. In support of this we already have Gwen Bortner, Cat Bordhi and Jane Patrick scheduled to visit TYF. We plan on continuing our focus on teaching new knitters, spinners and weavers, plus we'll be looking for ways to expand our crochet efforts. We'll also be offering the Olds College Master Spinners Level 2 program in the fall.

Giving Back to the Community: We believe that part of having a business in a community is to be part of the whole community by giving back. Our first focus in 2012 will be to continue the knitted knocker program in support of the Chandler Regional Hospital Cancer Center. Plans are to also do another Shawl to benefit MS. As the year develops we'll look for other opportunities, as they always have a way of presenting themselves.

Continuing to Grow Our Local Suppliers: Over the years we've asked you to Shop Local by supporting small businesses like Tempe Yarn. We intend to continue to do the same by growing our local supplier base.

Just for Fun: Having fun is essential to having a healthy life. We will be doing our 6th Annual Choose Your Own Adventure Retreat in July. There are several new knitalongs planned and Terry's head is filled with new patterns. Plus, with the arrival of Liam (see below), we'll have a new little person in the shop that will be sure to bring a smile to your face.

Business: For us to be here when you need us, we'll focus on keeping our business strong and healthy. You can help by shopping at Tempe Yarn and by spreading the word that we are here.

So let's all toast to 2012, may it be better than 2011 and lay the foundation for a great 2013.

Knitted Knockers Needed

The Chandler Regional Cancer Center is in need of more Knitted Knockers. TYF would like to ask our customers to step up to the plate again and help us resupply the Cancer Center. We did this early in 2011 and you donated several hundred.

What are Knitted Knockers? Knitted prosthetic breasts for mastectomy patients. Sounds silly, doesn't it? Yet, when placed in a bra, these knitted breasts take the shape and feel of a real breast. They are lighter and more comfortable than silicone prosthetic breasts. The knitted fabric breathes and prevents the heat rash experienced by many women wearing the silicone ones.

February 19-22, 2012

The "Fibers Through Time 2012" is a fiber arts workshop conference sponsored by the Arizona Federation of Weavers and Spinners Guilds. This conference will be held from April 19-22, 2012, at the Inn Place Phoenix North.

The Conference package includes: a 2 1/2 day workshop, Thursday evening reception, Friday night dinner, lunch Friday and Saturday.

This Conference is your chance to do an in-depth study in one of many different fiber arts disciplines in a 2 1/2 day workshop.

We are proud that our own Terry Neal will again be teaching "Free Form, or Art in Revolution" at this conference.

Reservations are now being taken for fleece from a shearing on March 24, 2012. If you want to purchase a fleece here's how to do it:

1) Check out the photos and descriptions below of the sheep and the fleeces that are available. Whole or half fleeces may be purchased. Please be aware that because of southern Arizona's heat we do not cover our sheep and there will be more veg than in jacketed sheep.

2) Tunis ewe fleeces generally shear 6-9 pounds; hogget fleeces somewhat less. CVM fleeces generally shear 8-10 pounds, but all sorts of environmental conditions will impace the final weight. Fleeces will sell off the sheep on shearing day at the farm and weighed at the un-skirted weight. Facilities are available to rough skirt before you take it home. Price will be $12/pound for Tunis and $15/pound for CVM UNSKIRTED on-site weigh, minus your paid $30 non-refundable deposit.

3) To reserve a fleece contact Tempe Yarn and Fiber at 480-557-9166. The unpaid balance will be paid to The Farm at the End of the Road and is due on the day of shearing. Deposit is forfeited if fleece is not paid for and picked up on shearing day.

4) After you've paid you deposit for your fleece at Tempe Yarn, you are welcome to come to the farm and see your fleece on the sheep on Farm Day (Saturday, December 3, 2011). Directions will be provided to everyone who purchases a fleece shortly after Thanksgiving. Please keep in mind that parking and facilities are limited, so if possible consider carpooling, and please no extra visitors other than immediate family members. Our Farm Store may be open with roving and handmade crafts too.

There are four of the original 11 fleece still remaining. If you want to purchase a fleece please do it now as they are selling fast. Here are the ones remaining:

Cindy’s slightly darker oatmeal fleece was also sold as roving at Tempe Yarn and Fiber, Spring 2011.

Ginger is the leader of the ewes, and Thor’s special interest. Her fleece was sold as roving at

Tempe Yarn and Fiber during Spring 2011.

Goldilocks’s hogget fleece really is the lovely soft tan that shows in the photo. A triplet great-granddaughter of Ramses, himself a legendary fleece producer, we look forward to her passing along the stunning color to lambs of her own..

Sweet Caroline is a larger than average Tunis ewe that will, of course, sheer a larger than average fleece! Her particularly lively wool is on the lighter end of the color range, and has interesting longer tufts throughout.

Great Yarns Have Arrived....

Eros II (LADDER YARN) that everyone has been asking about just arrived in a range of colors.

Our last order of (most likely) of Marina and Marina Multi (which Universal Yarns will no longer be making) arrived too.

From Manos del Uruguay Yarns, we received in Maxima Solid and Mulit. Maxima is a super soft and squishy kettle-dyed yarn. The worsted weight one-ply construction makes it a great all purpose yarn, and the fantastic yardage makes it perfect for 1 skein accessory projects. Fun, bright, intense colors will make your hand made item stand out from the crowd!

Also Manos del Uruguay Yarns, we received in Silk Blend (30% silk and 70% extrafine wool that's kettle dyed), is a luxurious blend of merino wool for softness with silk for lustre and drape. Perfect for indoor garments and transitional outerwear, its brilliant palette invites traditional colorwork. The soft heathering of the fiber blend plus the gentle striations of the kettle-dyeing process also give depth and complexity to single-color projects.

And finally from Manos del Uruguay Yarns, we added to our selection of Lace Multi (70% baby alpaca, 25% silk and 5% cashmere that's kettle dyed).

Heritage Silk & Silk Paints (85% Merino Superwash Wool and 15% Mulberry Silk) are very similar to the Heritage that we already know and love, but here the nylon has been replaced with silk for added strength, shine and drape. fact, our residential birdwatcher recently spotted a maple leaf "Snowbird."

For those of you who aren't birdwatchers, Snowbirds are people from U.S. Northeast, Midwest or Canada who spend a portion of their winter in warmer locales such as Arizona.

We love Snowbirds! They are friendly, courteous, kind and most important they love to knit, crochet, weave and spin (our kind of people). We are glad you are back and welcome you to our nest (shop).

What I'd like to do this year is see how many "Snowbirds" we can spot in the shop. Then I'll put up a flag representing where they are from.

With this rare breed you'll notice a common look in the lower body area. If you watch closely when a "Shifty" Ladies (front or rear) walks by, you'll see an eye catching swish.

All joking aside, each of these ladies are well dressed in their Sasha skirt made of EuroFlax Sport from Louet. This Louet pattern is knitted in the round. Hugs for Japan - A Journey

Our portion of this journey began shortly after the March 11th earthquake in Japan and ended today as Yumiko Alexander picked up the last of the Hugs for Japan scarves. From across the U.S.A. we received handmade donations of scarves (based on Yumiko's patterns), hats, sweaters, blankets and childrens items. You, yes YOU, made over 900 scarves, plus several hundred items. Take a bow!

But journey doesn't end here. Items are now being carried and shipped to Iwate Prefecture to an organization called Save Iwate.

Iwate Prefecture is the second largest prefecture of Japan. Iwate is known for its abundant nature. When the earthquake hit in March Iwate Prefecture was heavily damaged.

The items you made will greatly improve the quality of life for those impacted by the earthquake.

In addition to the handmade items, with the help of Christina Skye (Knitting Diaries), we also raised $367.54 to help offset the shipping costs of sending the items to Japan.

The Spread of Myth about Aran Knitting

Aran knitting is not an art that stretches back centuries, the people of the Aran Islands neither made nor wore what we now call Aran sweaters before about the mid-20th century and the stitches are not ancient and symbolic. So how did these myths become as widely accepted as facts?

Perhaps surprisingly it’s largely the work of one man – Heinz Kiewe.

In the 1930′s Murial Gahan, who owned a restaurant and craft shop in Dublin, visited the Islands and took some samples of the knitting she found there to sell in her Dublin shop. These were not Aran sweaters as we know them now, but an earlier form of patterned knit. There they were ‘discovered’ by a German visitor, Heinz Kiewe and that was the beginning of decades of misinformation.

Kiewe developed a theory, based on little more than his own intuition, that the sweaters had been knit for generations on the islands, that the patterns used were ancient Celtic ones and that there were images of Aran clothing in the Book of Kells. Although Kiewe had never been to Aran, he attributed meanings to the various stitches based on what he perceived or imagined to be the Aran lifestyle.

In 1967 he published a book, “The Sacred History of Knitting“, in which he expanded on his ideas, although remarkably he had still never visited the islands. This book expanded in great detail on his ideas, creating an elaborate history of knitting stretching back centuries, describing and attributing ancient significance to patterns and generally telling a story that was compelling and fascinating.

The problem is that none of it was based on fact, historical or otherwise. That trivial detail didn’t stop other authors assuming it was true and spreading it as fact, and the book was widely used as a source by people writing about Aran knitting. That nobody in Ireland or on the Aran Islands ever went to great lengths to correct the inaccuracies is, if you think about it, unsurprising – it truly was a marketers dream!

Reclaiming the Truth about Aran

The two people are most responsible for getting back to the truth about Aran are Scottish knitting writer Alice Starmore, who dug beneath the widely-believed myths and winkled out the truth for her book “Aran Knitting“, and Richard Rutt whose book “A History of Hand Knitting” was first published in 1987.

This is how it really came about.

The first known patterned sweater from Aran dates to about 1930 and is in the National Museum in Dublin. It’s not quite what we know to-day as Aran knitting, but you can see the relationship. This sweater resembles those created on the Scottish isles in many respects and it is possible that around this time at least one skilled knitter from Scotland was on the islands, perhaps working in the fish industry there, and brought a basic knowledge of stitch patterns to the Island women.

By 1946 sweaters knit in a style and construction that is more distinctively Aran had started to appear, as shown in a sweater from this period in the National Museum. The Islands by this time had become quite well known for their style of knitting, but it was produced only on a very small scale.

In the 1950s and 1960s, in an effort to provide a source of income for isolated Aran Islanders, commercial hand knitting was encouraged. It was seen that the Island women, who had little prospect of other employment, could produce a product readily saleable on the mainland. Knitting was taught to children in schools and to groups of women on the Island.

By the early 1960s the sweaters had fully evolved into the distinct and recognizable form familiar today and began to be widely produced and sold.

So, how Irish is Aran Knitting?

Completely Irish and it there is no dispute about its origin in the Aran Islands. Some people have expressed dismay that something they believed was an ancient traditional craft was in fact of recent origin and always commercial in nature. They shouldn’t.

It is immensely to the credit of the women living on the remote Islands of Aran in the mid-20th century that they developed and created an original style of knitting with such wide appeal. Their lives were as different as it is possible to imagine from those of their customers in Dublin, London, New York and other far flung places in the world. And yet they responded to the needs of their markets, conceived a myriad of beautiful and original knitting stitches and brought tremendous skill to bear in the creation of sweaters that were treasured for decades by their eventual owners.

It does no justice to these remarkable women to belittle their achievement or their creativity or to devalue their sweaters just because they, and not their forebears, came up with the style of knitting.

Second, with spinning wheels and looms if you want one as a gift for the holidays, it is very important that you order it at least 4-6 weeks before when you want it. As you would guess there is a lot of demand for these items at that time of the year, shipping is slow and many of the manufacturer close down for the holidays. So first consider coming into our shop and trying out a couple wheels. Then select the one you want and start dropping the hints.

Master Spinners Program by Olds College

There are three spaces left for the Master Spinners program in Tempe (Oct. 17-21).

Do you spin? Have you ever wanted to grow your spinning skills to the point where you are recognized as a "Master Spinner?" Well your time has come. In October you will have two opportunities in Arizona to begin your journey to becoming a Master Spinner through the Olds College.

The Olds College Master Spinner Certificate Program consists of six progressive levels of classroom and independent study involving skill development, research studies and project assignments in the area of hand spinning of all major types of fibers, yarns and the end use of the spun yarns. At all levels, students are evaluated on the basis of written assignments, practical projects, oral presentations and skill development. This is a program that spinners talk about around the world.

Each level is taught once per year. Levels 1-4 consist of a five day (30 hours) workshop, while Levels 5 and 6 are seven days (42 hours) in length. Each level is followed by an independent home study portion for those students working towards certification. Those individuals who successfully complete the assignments in all six levels will receive a Master Spinner Certificate from Olds College.

The class fee per level is $495, plus materials fee of $65. The class content for Level 1 will include selecting and preparing fibers, use of spinning equipment, spinning techniques, dyeing and general spinning knowledge. This is a fabulous opportunity for spinners of all levels. This first level will cover the basics so beginners are most welcome. You may audit the class or do the homework and receive college credit and work toward the Master Spinner Certificate.

Warm Earth II Book Signing on October 8th (Noon - 4pm)

The delivery date of Yumiko Alexander's new Warm Earth II book is set for mid-September. Since Yumiko will be going to Japan to deliver scarves as part of the Hugs for Japan community project at the same time, we will be holding the Warm Earth II book signing on October 8th from noon-4pm.

For those who pre-ordered the book, we'll let you know as soon as it arrives. There are also plans being made to do knit-alongs based on patterns from the book. Watch for more details.

Thank You Notes From Knitted Knockers Recipients

Just thought I'd share with you some of the Thank You notes that Chandler Regional Hopsital Cancer Center has received from ladies who received the Knitted Knockers. You should all be proud of how you helped make this happen.

There is still a need for more Knitted Knockers. It takes about one hour to make a knocker. We'll continue to accept them and you can get find the patterns here.

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you, but I have been in and out of the hospital a couple of times, and trying to recouper. :):)
I want you to know I have NOT worn my prosthesis since I got the new knitted ones from you.
They are so light and look so much better and they weigh nothing. A blessing for sure.
I simply love them and will probably never use the prosthesis again, just the weight alone is such a relief.
Just want to say THANK YOU again. I have been telling people about them.
I do get good reviews on how I look now, so thank you again from the bottom of my heart.

Hugs for Japan Ends On September 11th

People around the world were touched by the pictures of the damage caused by the earthquake that hit Japan on March 11th. But the yarn community, true to form, took action.

Chandler pattern designer, Yumiko Alexander, a native of Japan, wrote a two simple free patterns for knitters and crocheters to make scarves. This effort was christened "Hugs for Japan". An interesting side note is that several knitting groups in the earthquake impacted area took the patterns Yumiko wrote and started made scarves to sell in Tokyo to help them survive.

Tempe Yarn & Fiber, where Yumiko spends several days a week designing patterns, joined this effort and put out a call for knitters across the state to make the Hugs for Japan scarves. In parallel, Universal Yarn heard about what Yumiko was doing and put it on their website. Tempe Yarn was designated as the collection point for North America for all Hugs for Japan scarves.

New York Times Best Selling Author Christina Skye read about Hugs for Japan and donated copies of her new book, The Knitting Diaries, and held a book signing at Tempe Yarn. All proceeds for her book sales were donated to the Hugs for Japan to help offset the cost of shipping the scarves to Japan. A fund has been established (Crafts for Japan) to help pay for the shipping of the items to Japan.

Since this effort began, knitters and crocheters across the country have made and shipped to Tempe Yarn over 600 scarves.

Earlier this week Yumiko, with some help from her friends, began wrapping each of the scarves for delivery to Japan in September.

Attached to each scarf is an individual tag.

The tag reads, "I hope this scarf, made with love, warms your heart as much as your body this coming winter. You are always in our prays. From American Charity Knitting Groups."

Tempe Yarn & Fiber is proud of our involvement with this worthy effort. We want to thank everyone across the country who has participated.

But as we prepare to end our efforts for the Hugs for Japan, those impacted by the earthquake in Japan are preparing for the winter months ahead. We all wish them a mild winter and a quick recovery.

If you have scarves ready or near ready, remember the last day for collection of the Hugs for Japan scarves is September 11th.

Hugs for Japan Last Day is September 11

While it's not in the news any longer, the damage resulting from the March 11th earthquake/tsunami in Japan will take years to repair . But thanks to many of you Yumiko Alexander will be taking hand made items for distribution in October.

We have collected over 500 scarves, hats, and other small items from people across the country for the Hugs for Japan project. Yumiko's two free patterns (knitting pattern & crochet pattern) for "Hugs for Japan" are still available. For more information click here.

The last day to turn in items for Hugs for Japan will be September 11, 2011.

HeatSync Labs, a local 501(c)3 nonprofit workshop and great group of folks, has set up a website, Crafts for Japan, where if you wish you can make a donation to help pay for part of the shipping cost to send the expected 1000 plus knitted & crocheted items made for the Hugs for Japan effort.

Friends for Life

Over the years, Tempe Yarn & Fiber has strived to practice our belief that as a business we need to give back to our community. We've done this, with your help, by sponsoring numerous community projects for those in need. These include in part: Knitted Knockers, Chrysalis Center, Care7, Hospice of the Valley, Ronald McDonald House and Hugs for Japan.

One community project that you've continued to voice an interest involves animals shelters. With the weather soon turning cooler (believe me it will), there is a need for items to help keep animals in shelters warm.

Cora Lee our community project coordinator has been working with The Snuggles Project and has identified Friends for Life Animal Rescue in Gilbert as a recipient. The Snuggles Project offers a wide range of knitting and crochet patterns for Snuggles that can be used at shelters. Friends for Life Animal Rescue focuses on animal rescue and adoption. It was Voted 2010's "Best Animal Shelter" in the "AZcentral.com's Best" .

Our goal is to kick off the Snuggles Project in Mid-September. Watch tempeyarn.com for more details.

In addition to this project, there is a continuing need for the Knitted Knockers by the Chandler Regional Hospital Cancer Center. So don't be surprised if during our Community Event times (Mondays 11:30am to 12:30pm and Thursdays from 6-8pm) you see people doing Knitted Knockers.
