"Evolving Stash (Parking Lot Customer Exchange/Sale)" Was a Success

We want to thank everyone involved in this mornings Parking Lot Customer Exhange Sale. Lots of stash got exchanged and people seemed to have fun.

More importantly we raised $250.00 for the Ronald McDonald House of Phoenix.

A special thanks goes to Meg Cromley. Meg donated all the money she raised from her de-stashing to the Ronald McDonald House. Yarn people are really special.

Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reefs Display - Amazing

If you weren't able to attend the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reefs display this weekend, we would encourage you to make time to see the fruits of your work (and the many others who contributed to this cause) before it ends on July 11th. Here are a few pictures that we made today during the TYF field trip.
Names of everyone involved are posted on the wall in the main display room.
Lora Riordan's (a TYF reefer) piece was showcased at the entrance of the main display room.
The many pieces from across the valley were breathtaking!

Michelle Johnson of Laughing Cloud Studio Trunk Show & Sale, PLUS, Classes

Michelle Johnson of Laughing Cloud Studio. is an Arizona Fiber Artist whose work includes one-of-a-kind wearables, home decor, hand dyed & painted yarns and fabrics.

Michelle will be bringing her lovely hand dyed yarns to Tempe Yarn & Fiber for a Trunk Show & Sale on May 2, 2009 from 11 am till 4 pm. This event will be your opportunity to purchase Michelle's unique hand dyed yarns and see some of her current felting work.

Michelle will also be teaching several exciting classes in May.

On May 23rd (Saturday) from 10 am till 1 pm, Michelle will be teaching a Felted Embellished Earring workshop. In this workshop you will learn to create your own felted beads using wool roving, plus learn to wet felt around a core object to create a fun pair of spiral earrings.

On Saturday afternoon, from 2 pm till 5 pm, she will be holding another workshop (Treasure Brooch) where you will learn to wet felt around a small object, then cut part of the felt away, creating a bezel that reveals your "treasure" beneath.

Then, on Sunday May 24th, Michelle will continue her workshop fest with Beginning Nuno Felting. This workshop will be from 10 am till 5 pm and you will learn the basics of nuno felting (a wet felting process). You will be amazed at how nuno felting enables you to create felt with flexiblity and drape, and once you've mastered the techniques the design possiblilites are endless.

Class space is limited for all of her classes, so please register early to insure you get a seat. For more details about any of these classes stop by or call Tempe Yarn & Fiber.

On Sunday April 19th,
It's a TYF Field Trip to see the

Evolving Stash
(Parking Lot Customer Exchange/Sale)

Evolving Stash (Parking Lot Customer Exchange/Sale)Why do we have stash (a personal accumulation of yarn & fiber for future projects, for collection, or just because)? Most of us do and we love them. We also know that our stashes constantly evolve. We share with those we bring into the fold, we trade, we acquire new when we spot something we can't live without, friends and family gift us stash, we donate to schools & other organizations, and so on. Yarns come and go and we love every minute of the journey.

In honor of the stashes all over the world, we at Tempe Yarn have come up with what we think could be a fun event - something to help your stash evolve and at the same time help out our friends at
Ronald McDonald House.

On Saturday, April 25th from 8 am to 10 am we will be hosting a Parking Lot Customer Exchange/Sale of pre-owned Fiber related items.

Here's How It Will Work:

If you want to lighten up your stash, pre-register (by calling Tempe Yarn at 480 557 9166) to get a space to set up a table for your stash reduction. You will be responsible for pricing, selling, etc. You will need to bring your own table, set up at 7:45 am and take down at 10 am sharp. We will be asking for a $10 donation, to be collected when you pre-register, to give to Ronald McDonald House in exchange for your having a space to sell your stuff. Again, you must pre-register with TYF.

If you want to acquire additional stash, then show up on Saturday at 8 am to be one of the first to check out opportunities to add to your collection.

Why Are We Doing This?
We are doing this for you, our customers, because we think it could be a fun way for you to "swap" stashes around and a great excuse to organize and review all the wonderful yarns in your lives. The bonus here is that all the "table" donations will be given to Ronald McDonald House. In addition, we will have a table set aside that day to collect small items attendees may wish to donate to RMH. For a list of items they need click
here.

Note: Tempe Yarn & Fiber is only providing a venue for this event. All sales are between the buyer and the seller. Tempe Yarn & Fiber shall not be held liable for any items sold and/or any sales made at this event. Tempe Yarn & Fiber is not responsible for pricing, quality, or availability of products. Tempe Yarn & Fiber, the University Plaza, and/or the Ronald McDonald House shall not be held liable for any events, actions, sales, accidents, or losses resulting from participating in the activity.

Italy Earthquake: Elderly Woman Knitted As She Waited For Rescue

Maria D'Antuono told rescuers that during the 30 hours she was trapped, she occupied herself by knitting.

The stone house where the 98-year-old was buried under her bed in the village of Tempera, was a scene of devastation having completely collapsed on one side.

"She lived with her daughter, a retired teacher. Because of the strength of the quake, they thought the old woman was dead. They couldn’t look for her the first evening as it was too dark.

"The firemen came back at first light with a ladder and found Signora D’Antuono alive and in good health. It’s a miracle. She couldn’t do anything as she was stuck under the bed. They took her away, gave her a check-up and found her to be in perfect health. It’s incredible.”

Mystery "Magic Hobo Bag" Knitalong
Has Started

There are only TEN days remaining to sign up for the latest Tempe Yarn & Fiber Mystery Knitalong. The last day to sign up is April 18th.

Here are the details:

"Magic Hobo Bag" Knitalong
The inspiration for this project came from the traveling that most of us do throughout the year, but especially during the summer. Once it is completed, the Magic Hobo Bag can be transformed into a travel pillow, a shrug, a shoulder shawl, a lap blanket, and, last but not least, a small hobo bag. We hope it will become your favorite travel companion as you venture out on future journeys! Registration for the Mystery Hobo Bag Knitalong is open from April 4th -18th, so be sure to stop by TYF soon to sign up and pre-order your yarn and/or needles. A $10 participation fee and a 50% deposit on yarn, needles, and shipping (if applicable) is due at registration.

The recommended yarn is Sierra by Cascade, and it will take eight skeins total for this project. The skill/experience level for the Mystery Magic Hobo Bag is Advanced Beginner to Intermediate. Participants should have some knitting and pattern reading experience. Clues will be spaced out so that participants can expect about 1" of knitting per day (over approx. 150 sts.). The yarn order will be placed with Cascade after registration closes, with delivery expected at TYF sometime during the week of April 27th. Participants will be notified once their yarn arrives, and arrangements can be made ahead of time for yarn to be shipped to anyone who won't be able to come in to TYF to pick theirs up. On May 4th we will begin emailing Yahoo! Group invitations to everyone who has picked up their yarn. Weekly Mystery Knitalong support/social groups will be held on Tuesdays from Noon-2:00 pm and from 6:00-8:00 pm, and a Show and Tell celebration will be held at TYF once the knitalong has been completed.

"Choose Your Own Adventure Retreat" Registration is open!

Retreating from the real world; immersing yourself in something you feel passionate about; being with others who "get it" about that skein of yarn, project, fluff of fiber or pattern; uninterrupted time to "be" with your projects; and sharing in the energy of having that many fiber people in one space, those are just a few reasons why you will want to attend the Tempe Yarn & Fiber 2009 "Choose Your Own Adventure Retreat." Another reason is that it's fun!

Where is it going to be you ask? Well this year it's going to be at the Clarion Hotel Scottsdale at 5101 North Scottsdale Road. Hotel Scottsdale offers fresh, contemporary accommodations and outstanding hotel amenities in a trendy, "Spanish Villa" setting. Participants are NOT required to stay at the hotel to participate in the Retreat, but it sure adds to the fun.

When is the great adventure?
We’ll kick off the weekend on Friday, July 17th with a Reception from 8-10 pm so you can begin to decompress before the serious fun begins on Saturday.

Then on Saturday, July 18th the doors will open at 9:00am for your journey into the 2009 “Choose Your Own Adventure Retreat.” A very unstructured agenda is still in the planning stages but activities will continue till 10:00pm. We'll start again on Sunday morning at 9:00am and continue till 3:00pm when we'll close out the adventure.

For more details, call, stop by or email us and we'll get you signed up while there are spaces still left.
